The Wedding of Pocahontas

It was a beautiful day at Jamestowne Island - perfect weather for the wedding of John Rolfe and Pocahontas.  The World of Pocahontas put on a beautiful commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the marriage, and I was fortunate enough to attend the morning ceremony.

Caution:  This is a picture-intensive post!

Quite a crowd had gathered to witness the ceremony.

A bit of period music was played beforehand:

The wedding party processed in:

The groom, in red.
The bride, in her exquisitely embroidered jacket.

A look at the bride's full ensemble:

Stratfords!

The ceremony begins:

I believe this was Opachisco, Pocahontas's uncle:

He gave some remarks on how the Pamunkey tribe viewed this union.

Members of the Jamestowne colony shared their own thoughts on the marriage, as well:

As I understand it, historians cannot agree on which minister officiated the wedding, so we had them both.  Rev. Alexander Whitaker and Rev. Richard Buck:

And they were married!

The wedding party kindly stayed on the stage a little while for photos:

I feel very honored to have played my own small part in helping to create some of the clothing for this historic occasion.  (In addition to helping with the embroidery, I also did a little work on John Rolfe's ensemble.)  It was very cool to be there to witness it all.  :)
